From Black, To Green

“You too, can keep your love fern alive…”

P.S. Lee, you can have your vase back!

There was a time that I prided myself in my ability to kill fake plants. I had the worst black thumb and thus no clean O2, or pretty green leaves of joy to be found. It was like Bergen Town (can you tell I’m a mom?). I don’t know what changed over the years, perhaps getting older or having children, or maybe just better lighting, but my green thumb, finally, came in.

It started with my love fern, really it’s Peperomia Obtusifolia Jade, we’ll call it POJ for short , from my girlfriend who was moving away. She gifted me this stalk of POJ, in this beautiful vase and I thought, “well I can’t let our love fern die,” (props to Andie Anderson for the line) and so I watered it and stuck it in the sun.

At some point, I thought to myself, maybe I should re-pot it. Then I would be able to give her the vase that she loved back. Something magical happened when I re-potted it, it started to grow, and grow, and grow, until there was no room left and no denying that I had to move her into a bigger pot!

This little lady now resides in my shower room and has exploded! I’m really excited to see how big she will get this Spring. Come on warm weather and sun!

Moral of the story, with the right amount of water and sunlight, a well-draining, appropriate sized pot and some love (plants have feelings too), you too, can keep your love fern alive, but we’ll save that for next week!
