Snow and cold got you down? I have good news for you…Spring is just around the corner, literally, it’s March 20th. The best thing about Spring, besides the warmer weather, are the plants, trees and flowers coming back to life!! The best place to get those plants, trees and flowers, you ask? Local nurseries!!

Local nurseries and greenhouses are the best places to purchase your houseplants or outdoor plants, flowers and trees. These places have knowledgable staff that can help choose the right plant for you and reassure you with helpful tips on pruning, watering, light, and care for the plants you purchase. They have a vested interest in each individual plant, because they, most likely, grew them from clippings or seeds. They ensure that each individual plant gets the care it needs to thrive.

I have many nurseries/greenhouses that I love here in Colorado. My favorite one, here in the Springs, however, is Phelan Gardens. Located at 4955 Austin Bluffs Parkway, they have been around since 1981 and are a family owned business. Know this, when you shop local, you are helping with your local economy and community! It’s a win-win!

Phelan Gardens, run currently by owners Mark and Monica Phelan, is a very welcoming space. They not only have indoor and outdoor plants, seasons allowing, but they also carry a wide variety of soils, additives, seeds, as well as, other gardening products, pots, and cute knick knacks. They have one main greenhouse that houses most of their houseplant inventory and three greenhouses out back that hold their overstock in the winter or outdoor stock in the warmer months.

From the moment you walk into Phelan’s you are greeted like family! There are always classes going on, to help educate you on different gardening topics. Want to know a little secret? They have a reward program, so the more plant babies you buy, and let’s face it every one needs more of those in their life, the more points you accumulate, working towards money off of your next purchase! Free plants, um, okay! They also have, what they call Phelan Friday, on their Facebook account, where they ask plant trivia and choose a lucky winner, at random, to win some FREE Phelan bucks.

One fun thing about Phelan, that sets them apart from other nurseries and greenhouses that I have been too, is that they have chickens, butterflies, tarantulas, and other friends, for your children to ooh and aaah at! I always feel at home there. Go check them out!!

I know not everyone lives in Colorado, but it’s as easy as typing in [your state] + nurseries or greenhouses into Google and hitting the search button!! I promise, you will not be upset. There is something magical and euphoric about walking in to these places and just, being. I hope you can find your paradise and beautiful new plant babies for this Spring! Below I’ve linked a few of my other favorite Colorado nurseries/greenhouses.
