My Non-Traditional Wedding Dress
Shopping for a wedding dress can be both stressful and exciting.
Some brides schedule the “Say Yes to the Dress” appointment, where you invite all of your family and friends, while trying on dresses for three hours. Others prefer shopping by themselves at a secondhand store. I did both. Here are my experiences and why I chose a dress…well, two dresses, from Amazon.
Gasp, no you didn’t…Yes honey, yes I did.
While I did have a blast trying on dresses at one of the most expensive bridal boutiques in town, they just weren’t for me and I knew I could never sleep at night if I spent $1,000+ on a dress I’ll wear once. Since I love a good deal and thrifting is my favorite past time, I made it my living after all, I opted to try on and buy a dress at a great little second-hand bridal store in Denver, CO called The Green Bride. They sell second-hand dresses, up to 80% off retail value. If you’re in the area, I highly recommend them.
For the budget conscious bride, buying second-hand can save you hundreds of dollars! I purchased a Maggie Sottero Haven wedding gown, in pristine condition, at 60% off the retail price. I fell in love with the dress, but those feelings were about to change drastically. A few months went by and my fiancé and I decided to change our wedding day plans. We went from planning a traditional wedding, to planning a pop-up wedding. Also, on top of that, I had lost 30 lbs., dropping from a size 18 to a size 14. Oops.
Now that I had purchased a semi-expensive dress there’s no way I could afford another one that price, so I resorted to Amazon. I purchase items and clothing from Amazon all the time, but buy a wedding dress? Am I crazy? Maybe. Am I a genius? Also maybe, but here goes nothing. Let me tell you, I could not be happier with my choices. Granted, I’m not wearing a typical white wedding dress. However, if you pay close attention to the reviews and pictures, I’m sure the “traditional” wedding dress will be just fine, if you decided to go that route.
My dresses, yes, two, since they were so cheap, are described as prom dresses, but who cares. It’s my day, I can wear what I want right?
Our theme for our pop-up wedding is “Comic Con” and we love to cosplay, so we thought It would be fitting to dress as our favorite characters and call it “Cosplay Chic”. I picked Ariel, from The Little Mermaid, as my outfit inspiration because one, she’s one of my favorite Disney characters and two, who wouldn’t want to dress up like an actual princess for their wedding? I found the perfect dress on Amazon, for about $80. It’s teal and sequined from head to toe! My second dress is for the reception dinner and it’s a stunner! This one was inspired by Ariel’s purple dress ( the one she wears, while running through the water, to be reunited with Prince Eric). This one only cost around $100.
So, moral of the story, be you and wear what you want to wear on your wedding day. There are so many options to choose from for affordable wedding gowns. Trust me, I’ve done the leg work!
