Direct Sales Companies: Scheme or Dream?

Direct Sales Companies: Scheme or Dream?

Once upon a time, almost 3 years ago to be exact, I was confronted about hosting an on-line Usborne book party. I had never hosted one. All I knew was that some of my friends had started posting about what "new thing" they were selling. My thoughts about this, at the time, were ones of, “great, like I can’t buy this off of Amazon or a shelf in Walmart? Now, I get to have my friends shoving product in my face....” I had always made a promise to myself that I wouldn’t become one of those people, I wasn’t a sales person, if the product is that good why isn’t it in a store?

I told the girl no, it wasn’t going to happen and thought that was the end of it. Nope, a couple of weeks later she asked again. I don’t know exactly how long this went on, but soon after I started to like the idea of getting free and 1/2 price books for my daughter. That’s the teacher in me I guess, getting books for my kid and classroom, for free or 1/2 off?! Couldn’t pass that up! Once I found out I didn’t have to put anything into the party, except a little bit of time, I figured I would give it a try. My next thought was that since I was going to do this for her, it would be the last of it and I wouldn’t have to do it again. How wrong I was!

“I am just a mom, who wants her daughters to have the best books…”

I hosted that party in October of 2016 and it was a huge success. Like, huge sales (thanks to all my teacher friends) and I got tons of free and 1/2 price books for myself. She said she would contact me again, in about 6 months to a year and I told her, "of course I would host again." It had been the easiest thing ever! As soon as I saw the variety and quality of the books, I knew I had to have them all! I definitely couldn’t buy them all at full price, because #teachersalary, but I knew I could host forever, slowly building my collection. Well, six months came and there I was, hosting again, and this party was even more successful!  I couldn’t believe it!

After party number two I was mad I wasn’t making money, since I was doing so much. These people were all my friends and clearly, they are loving the books, so why couldn’t I do this as a side gig. So, I started thinking, this girl is, literally, making money from posting things online, 25% commission adds up fast! And who doesn't want books at a discount, forever?!  So, I decided to take the plunge and join Usborne Books & More. It was the absolute, most spontaneous thing, I had ever done. I have now been selling for two years, this coming April and have promoted within the company. It has been such a joy to spread the love of literacy, outside of the classroom. I get to give amazing gifts, books of course, to all of my friends’ kids and their precious new babies! Yay books! I have met some of the most amazing people and have friends that I would never have found without these books! This job has brought so much joy to my life!

This MLM, this pyramid scheme, this isn’t what anyone thinks. It isn’t any of those things and it breaks my heart we are put in that category. I am still NOT a salesperson. I am just a mom, who wants her daughters to have the best books, to be readers, to have books that grow with them, to spread the love of literacy. It is the best job I have ever had and I cannot wait to see where the rest of this journey takes me.
