Henry Doorly Zoo
This is my first summer in Omaha. It is also the first semester of school for me after 16 years. I have been BUSY. Full-time school with kids underfoot was not my best idea, but I am making it work. In between quizzes and speeches, I have been taking he boys on mini adventures, playing tourist in our own town. Today, let’s talk about the zoo!
The Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha is one of the best zoos I have ever been to. Honestly, it may even be my favorite of all time. It is well thought out, still being upgraded for the animals, and has a ton of inside adventures making it great even if the weather is being intense.
The desert dome. Everything you could ever want to see of the desert, with access to food, water, and civilization a few yards away. Also fantastic if you are suffering the winter blues.
Although there is plenty to see in the glass dome, even better is the basement (yeah that whole sentence surprised me too). They have an entire cave system and a swamp hidden down there. Alligators, beavers, bullfrogs, and bats, galore.
Another spectacular indoor exhibit is the rainforest. Upper and lower areas have trails, bridges, and free flying fruit bats! I love this exhibit in particular, because you feel immersed in it. I have no idea what the real rainforest is like, but this is as close as I am willing to get on any given Tuesday.
Now let’s move on to the Aquarium. I could have taken a million pics and videos… Ok, I did, but I will try and keep it scaled back to let you have something to look forward to also. I spent an enormous amount of time watching jellyfish and I am not ashamed to admit it.
A lot of zoos I see have beautiful outdoor exhibits, but the animal barns can be lacking. I am not going to lie, elephants and giraffes in Omaha, Nebraska? They must spend a large portion of time inside. I would have been sad if their indoor exhibits were concrete cells. Not the case here. The barns are fantastic.
This is maybe 1/4 of the exhibits. I will report back on the rest another time. What is your favorite zoo? If it’s this one, what is your favorite exhibit?
